IEEE Canadian Foundation Terry Branch Scholarship

General  
The IEEE Canadian Foundation awards one annual Terry Branch Scholarship (the “Branch Scholarship”) of $1,000.

Description
The Branch Scholarship recognizes and furthers the lifelong passion of Terry Branch in mentoring students in IEEE fields of interest to successfully transition to their next stage of attainment such as advanced study or positions in research, industry, not-for-profits or government.



Help Accelerate the Impact
Friends, colleagues, and past mentees of Terry Branch are encouraged to accelerate the impact of this new scholarship by donating to the IEEE Canadian Foundation Terry Branch Scholarship Fund. Donations may be made by several methods, please see Ways to Give on the left menu column. Every gift has an impact and is greatly appreciated by family, friends and colleagues who have chosen the IEEE Canadian Foundation as the host of this scholarship.
Gifts made initially via GoFundMe in memory of Terry Branch are gratefully appreciated and have been fully transferred as leading donations to this Fund.

Mentoring  
Mentoring partnerships and group activities provide guidance in multiple areas such as career, education, leadership, and volunteering. Partners may include IEEE Young Professionals, Women in Engineering, Life Members as well as non-IEEE groups such as professional engineering or technologist associations. Mentoring encompasses:

  • Students seeking educational or career guidance
  • Recent graduates wanting advice on entering the professional workforce
  • Professionals making a career move or career change
  • Those looking for guidance in developing professional and leadership goals
  • Those wanting to learn how to navigate their career path from an experienced professional
  • Executives, consultants, upper management sharing experience on career and leadership
  • Educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, or self-employed offering their unique guidance
  • Proven leaders offering inspiration, insight and communication effectiveness
  • IEEE officers or volunteers sharing broad knowledge of the engineering landscape
  • Experts in relevant fields providing technical direction on current trends.
Eligibility  
The nominee must be an IEEE Student member or Graduate Student member in good standing, enrolled full-time at a Canadian University or College in a program of undergraduate or graduate study in an EEE designated field. One is not eligible if they are the recipient of another IEEE Canadian Foundation scholarship or award/prize in the past 12 months. Judging will be on merit in accordance with the criteria set out. Individualized mentoring arrangements such as one-to-one coaching are not covered by this scholarship.

Criteria for Award of Scholarship  
Criteria for selection of a recipient from the applicants are set out below:
  1. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at their university or college
  2. Must demonstrate enthusiasm, leadership and positive outcomes in leading or substantially helping to organize mentoring activities for wide benefit within their IEEE Canada Student Branch, Section or Region. Supporting outcomes of mentoring activities may include skills development, expanded networks, self-confidence and self-efficacy, engagement in the program and how much participants value it
  3. First in family to attend college or university (siblings excepted) encouraged to seek Nominations
  4. The Nomination may come from an IEEE Student Branch Counsellor or any IEEE Member with first hand knowledge of the Nominee’s engagement with mentoring. Self nominations not accepted
Submission Process  
The Nominee will first complete the online Student Declaration, which is then automatically forwarded to the expected Nominator by email to confirm and add Nominator remarks and citation. The Student Declaration must be submitted on-line using the “applications and nominations” link on the left side of this page in sufficient time for the Nominator to respond, all no later than by March 15.
On submission both the Nominee and the Nominator will receive an online acknowledgement and an emailed acknowledgement. If either of these does not occur, please email the address listed at Contact Us on the left side of this page.
The Foundation may decide not to award a Branch Scholarship in a given year if there is not a suitable candidate.

Notification  
Applicants and Nominators will be notified via e-mail by the IEEE Canadian Foundation as soon as possible following the determination by the Board, typically by the end of April. Payment of the scholarship award to the recipient of the Branch Scholarship will be made to the recipient’s student account at their Canadian university mid-August or paid as otherwise agreed with the recipient, subject to applicable law and regulation.

Certificate  
Nominees will be notified via e-mail by the Foundation, as soon as possible following the meeting of the Board of Directors. The recipient's University (or College) will be contacted by the Foundation regarding the awarding of the scholarship and financial arrangements. Payment will be made directly to the educational institution.
