About Donations - and how to give

The IEEE Canadian Foundation needs your support to help us deliver our programs of Scholarships, Learning Resource Centres, and Special Grants which are financed from our General Fund. We also invite directed donations to extend our program of endowed awards - for example, many of IEEE Canada's Major Awards are not yet endowed. Together we have a unique opportunity to encourage innovation in, and provide practical project experience to, some of our best engineering students ever; and to recognize achievement in our schools, industry and research centres. Please view our Grants page and the pages linked there to see how we use our funds. Total of all grants and scholarships awarded since 1958 to the end of 2009 is $1,289,868.

The following topics are covered below:
  • Types of Donations
  • Foundation Funds
  • 4 Ways to Donate
  • Tax Receipts
  • Donor Recognition Program

    Types of Donations
  • Donations can be of any size, and either one-time or continuing.
  • Donations in excess of $1000 can be targeted for specific activities (consistent with the mission of the Foundation) - please contact the Chair of the Donations Committee if you would like to discuss this aspect.
  • Donations that are large enough to perpetually fund an award (scholarship, grant, prize, etc.) can be used for an award presented in honour of a certain person or organization.   For more information, please read about our endowment policy or contact the Chair of our Donations Committee if you would like to discuss this option.
  • Donations that are part of estate planning (in consultation with your lawyer, financial advisor, or insurance advisor)
Life Insurance - name the IEEE Canadian Foundation as your beneficiary or donate an existing policy that you no longer need
Will or Trust Provision - make a charitable bequest to the IEEE Canadian Foundation in your will or living trust.
  • Matching Gifts - Donors are reminded that many corporations have a policy of matching individual donations with an equal corporate contribution, thereby increasing the benefits for each donation. If you are unsure if your employer has a matching gifts policy, contact your employer's Human Resources office to find out if they match employee donations. If your company does not currently match employee donations, suggest they consider doing so. Obtain a Matching Gift form and review the program guidelines to ensure that the IEEE Canadian Foundation is eligible to receive matching gifts from your employer. Complete the donor section of the form and submit it, along with your cheque, to our treasurer at: IEEE Canadian Foundation, 456 Rogers Street, Peterborough, Ontario K9H 1W9.

    Foundation Funds
  • The General Fund - the original fund used for supporting Centre Grants, related Scholarships, and Special Grants.

  • The Montreal Conferences Inc. (MCI) Fund - created in 2006 to fund the Quebec Science Fair Prizes.
  • The Canadian Life Members Fund - created in 2008 to enable IEEE Life Members in Canada to donate to projects supported by the IEEE Canada Life Members Committee - who are listed at www.ieee.ca/activities/life_mem.htm
  • The TELUS Fund - created in 2009 to support the IEEE Canada R.A. Fessenden Medal
  • The ECE Department Chairs Fund - created in 2009 to support the IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineering Educator Medal

    Four Ways to Donate
  • Annual Renewal - select the IEEE Canadian Foundation as your choice when you complete your annual IEEE membership renewal form (paper or web version) - for contributions to the General Fund only
  • On-line in Canada - use this link to a secure website specially operated to enable online giving for Canadian charitable organizations - you can direct your gift to the General Fund, the Judy Clift Fund, the Canadian Life Members Fund, or the Technology for Humanity Fund.
  • Mail - send your cheque directly to our treasurer at: IEEE Canadian Foundation, 456 Rogers Street, Peterborough, Ontario K9H 1W9

    Tax Receipts
  • All donations are tax-deductible in Canada.
  • If you donate by annual renewal, you will be mailed a receipt by our treasurer - as soon as the funds are transfered from IEEE in the U.S. to our treasurer.
  • If you donate on-line, within minutes of making a donation, you will receive an electronic tax receipt (accepted by our Canada Revenue Agency) mailed to the email address you provided in the donation process.   You can save and print this receipt at any time to use for income tax purposes.
  • If you send a cheque directly to our treasurer, you will receive your receipt within a week of his receiving your donation.
