Recreational Facilities
When not a place of work, the IEEE Office can double as a lounge, a study, a bedroom and simply a place to escape! Most of the time, students are "chilling" on the three-person couch, talking with friends. When no one else is around, chances of that happening are minimal, so it's pretty easy to pick up the phone and call up friends, since the phone is conveniently placed by the couch! The sofa was donated by David Palazzo, Vice-Chair of IEEE during 2000-2001. He hoisted the couch on top of his car and carted it over to the office. As to how he managed to move that bulky thing up here up to the 7th floor is still a mystery to this day... We'll need to steam-clean it one of these days. Then there's the famous IEEE not-so-round table... if we pull it away from the wall, it can sit easily at least ten people. Used by people for studying and doing homework, at other times it's used for playing cards, working on electronics and hardware, and eating lunch!
Speaking of which, eating is everyone's favorite past time. And since IEEE is so conveniently located on the same floor as the cafeteria, it's not unusual for students to grab their food and eat on the table or couch. We even have a nice coffee table for the couch (also donated by David).
Being engineers usually means being deprived of sleep! Students touching the couch with high fatigue levels are usually fall under the couch's spell and instantaneously fall asleep. Of course, in the presence of other overly bored, tired engineers, that spell doesn't usually last for long! Coming up with the funniest way to wake them up can be written off as a pastime, though the sleeping person probably wouldn't approve of such a past-time, nor find it funny!
IEEE is proud of its resting facility and provides students with a home away from home. The couch, the 12 chairs, the six tables and the phone are the best way for friends to reunite and make new friends!
